    About

After suffering a major depressive episode, a doctor encouraged me to take up knitting to occupy my time and help with my mood. I decided to try to make my Irish mother a blanket as a thank you for teaching me to knit as a young girl - a pastime I had not touched for 30 years. I was a beginner at best at the beginning of this project, but decided it really all came down to moving one stitch at a time from left to right, no matter how big the project. So I began knitting this beautiful throw, having NO idea what I was doing and looking up "how to"s and videos with every stitch. As the blocks grew, so did my confidence. And my mood. I decided to add to the pattern in order to make it a queen-sized bedspread and added additional cabled rows and columns and 4 additional blocks. I was flying high when I realized I'd be done by Christmas. On Christmas morning my mother literally cried when she saw it. I have knitted every single day ever since, and my depression is now a distant memory!

What a moving story and a beautiful afghan. I also find hooking (crocheting in my case) to be the best, most powerful therapy for depression.
