I have been knitting for as long as I can remember. My "special needs" sister was never taught this skill, as it was believed to be too challenging for her. At the age of 23, Cathy moved from Newfoundland to Indianapolis and became the "nanny" to my 2 children. Over the next 12 years, her independence grew: she volunteered at various places, travelled the country, acquired many new skills and she learned to knit! It was a huge challenge for us both. I am a left handed knitter and she was right-handed, so I first had to learn "right-handed" in order to teach her.
It took Cathy 1 year to complete this beautiful sweater but SHE DID IT! Over the last two years of her life she made many scarves and dishcloths and gifted them to friends and family. Sadly, at the young age of 42 she lost her courageous battle to ovarian cancer.
I share this story because "knitting" gave my sister such joy, such a sense of accomplishment and praise from others. I feel her love whenever I wear this sweater!
