    About

Another day, another blanket. There's a deadline on this one. The collection date for the next shipment is 12th June. I've done seven strips of a 12 strip blanket, 13 diamonds to a strip. 65 diamonds to go. Common sense tells me knit several baby garments instead. Pig headedness says keep at it.

The blanket is beautiful. Your blanket will reach someone in need and the intentions you have when you make it will bring good somewhere else. We have to believe that when things like this are done there is a positive outcome. Your blanket is a generous and beautiful gift.

So why do I do it? Because it's life enhancing, and if it enhances more than just my life, so much the better.

Finished ahead of deadline. Time for a baby jumper as well. However, worked out some statistics that give pause for thought. Materials work out at about £40. Hours work, 156 diamonds @ 40 mins each, 104 hours = 15 working days roughly basic wage, £728. Total 'value' £768. I hope it actually reaches a refugee family and keeps several children warm.

I knit blankets like this. How do you join your diamonds together so neatly?

It's all knitted together, no sewing except weaving in ends. I knit a strip the full length of the blanket, joining new colours on a right side row and slipping the last stitch of every row purlwise. This gives a nice selvedge to pick up on following strips. Second strip, with long tail for casting on, pick up last cast on stitch from 1st strip and cast on required number. 1st row knitting will be right side. End r. side row wf, sl 1 purlwise, purl into both loops of selvedge st and psso. On w side rows sl 1k, k to last st, sl 1p . Photo added showing w. side.

@Val H: Thanks Val. I have spent hours sewing all my squares together. Approximately 300 in the blankets I've knitted so far. Plus a knit a 50 stitch trim right around the blankets which needs sewn on too.

@Linda H: yes, my first 10 blankets were all sewn up, and admittedly you can play around with the squares to make a design, but it's the knitting I enjoy, and once I'd found this method I waved goodbye to sewing up without any regrets. It works just as well for squares, diamonds, whatever. The current blanket has 38 diamonds to go for a shipping deadline on 12th June. Think I've got it cracked.

@Linda H: Just a tip about knitting your squares together: if you ever have the misfortune to drop that link stitch where you've picked up the selvedge and psso, grab it quick because it unravels like wildfire, detaching all your squares from the previous row, and I've never yet worked out how to put it right as you would an ordinary dropped stitch without frogging lots of good work. It's a real downer!

That's what I need to hear Hazel. For every dark and evil deed in this world, knit a bit of sunshine.

The blanket is gorgeous and you have a lot more determination than me - keep going and those 65 diamonds will be done in no time.

Just 22 diamonds left and 8 days. I'll have time for a baby jumper as well. Hooray.
