My son was diagnosed with a terminal illness. WE were told we would have a year with him but his body would be shutting down and he would be unable to move before long. I ask all the significant women in his/my life to knit a blanket square so he could be wrapped in love in his last months. He passed away much sooner than we were told and the blanket was put together as we sat with his body. I wrapped him in it and he was cremated in it. IT was a comfort for so many to 'do' something for him and for me to wrap him in warmth and love as he left us. The blanket was only in existence for 2 days but it is one of the best things I have ever had a hand in making. MY squares were by his face and the knitting gave me something to focus on while he was sick, one stitch at a time.
