Thanks Carol. I love your colours but sadly I dont have an Aldi nearby! I've priced the smallest size at £30 if using the Sirdar and with 4 to make in ascending sizes that's really beyond my budget! Will have to do some more research. Thanks for your help anyway .

As a suggestion, have you tried budget wools, most wool shops stock it and it's similar in price & I'm sure you'd be able to obtain similar colour's, I didn't use the actual wool recommended apart from the 4ply because of the cost and the size required. Mine was originally priced @ £60 plus using the recommended Sirdar Wool - good luck - keep hunting I'm sure you'll find summat similar.

@Carol D: Yes, thanks for this. To do the 4 sizes I want for the great nieces would have been somewhere in the region of £120 in Sirdar Snuggly! I'm going to try the smallest size for the 2 year old in a multi colour chunky and see how that works out. Not sure what to do about gauge though where you only use 2 strands of DK in the pattern

@Sally J: Good luck, hope it works out. You will need a single colour as well for the tail which gives it the desired effect - be nice if you posted on here on completion to compare the difference

@Carol D: I've cast on! Done the rib and now onto main part. I used 2 strands of Stylecraft DK (turquoise) and am doing the cocoon In JC Brett Marble Chunky. Enjoying the pattern and making the smallest size so will see how it turns out!

@Carol D: first one done! Worked out well with the single strand of chunky, I think and the finished measurements seem accurate according to the pattern, although the sizing seems pretty big to me for a 2 year old? The colour in the photo isn't great - it's much more greeny-blue. Second one will be a different pattern.....

Very pretty. Thinking of making some of these for Christmas 2017.....! Could you tell me what yarn you used please - the colours are just so 'mermaidy!' Thanks in advance,
      Sally.

To be very honest I used Aldi DK wool to keep the cost down because the bigger the blanket the more wool used, this was priced @ £2.99 for 4 balls of wool in green, 4 balls in Turquoise & I used the recommended 4 balls Sirdar Snuggly 4 ply in Periwinkle for the contrast. The actual colours recommended via the pattern should be Sirdar Snuggly in Choo Choo Train & Sirdar Snuggly in Peaceful & Sirdar Snuggly 4 ply Periwinkle - colours will look different from mine but are the recommended shades, hope this helps

Thank you, I enjoyed knitting it, very very thick compared to shop bought tails
