I made this for a 16 year old as part of our Christmas outreach for a local orphanage.

    About

December came & passed by so quickly, I barely could catch a breather! Now that (nearly) everything has gone back to their own paces, I could finally take some moments to myself to reflect on the past year.

Now this was a special kit. I’ve already planned to create a kit especially for Mum as her 2018 Mother’s Day present (who knows she would find knitting as interesting as I do) but when a friend of ours approached us for a Christmas outreach sometime in November, I knew I had to proceed with the idea much sooner.

Each child in the orphanage listed down their hobbies & interests so we donors could match the presents. As we went through the list, this particular girl caught our attention as she’s the only child to have listed craftwork as hers. Quite a general term, yes… but we thought - perhaps a beginner’s knitting kit would spark interests in this particular craft.

Let’s hope it will… because… yay! Another knitter added to the bunch!

    Needles & Hooks

    • Single Point 4.00mm (US 6) 25cm

    Accessories

    • Tapestry Needle
    Other : 1 Row Counter
    1 Haberdashery Pouch

    Measurements

Notes: The kit consists of 4 basic lessons (the last being more of a challenge - a finished item by alternating garter & stockinette stitches), with each ball of yarn tagged according to each lesson & some more extra balls for her to experiment with.

I’ve also included basic knitting instructions & pictures into the booklet, just in case she’s unable to watch video tutorials due to limited access to the internet.

What a lovely thing to do Na Yeo! I just love the way you think. I started a pod group for at risk kids and stocked it from Op shops for the tools, Lincraft donated some of the yarn. It has been a lovely way for the kids to create, and connect. You go girl!

Such kind words, Susan. Thank you! It's so lovely of you to share your story too. I've yet to come across such effort in this country as knitting here isn't as progressive as it is in other countries.

It'd be wonderful to adopt your effort! I've thought about it before (also inspired by the deaf & mute community that fully manages a Starbucks outlet I frequent) - I could start with them as they are actively looking for skill based activities. My sign language is very much elementary but they would provide interpreters for such programmes.

Perhaps I should give it more serious thoughts from now on. Who knows... this craft might catch on after all. ;)

@Na Yeo: Kindness costs nothing but the difference one person can make is like the ripples in the ocean. Share the joy, thank you Na Yeo

Let's hope so, Alison. Would be wonderful to see the younger generation as immersed as we are in this craft.
