The Effortless Cardigan features madelinetosh tosh DK, which has a recommended gauge of 5.5 - 5 sts/inch on a US 6 - 7 needle, making it closer to a worsted weight. If you are looking to substitute yarn, I would suggest worsted weight to get the fabric right.
