How to knit a stockinette stitch

Learn to knit the classic stockinette stitch which sees knit and purl rows alternate to create a material so cosy and versatile it can be used for pretty much anything. The British call this stitch the stocking stitch. Perfect for blankets, socks and scarves.

Step by step

  1. Knit alternate knit and purl rows.
  2. Turn and work a row of purl stitches on the wrong side.
  3. Repeat.
