The patterns for the Noah's Ark elephant and giraffe call for the spots to be embroidered on after the various pieces are knit. I worked the spots in as I knitted. I follwed the spot pattern for the elephants, but for the giraffe, I did more random, free-form spots which ended up looking much more like the markings on a real giraffe. This required a ot of weaving in of ends, but I was very pleased with the results.
