    About

Mum wanted a long aran cabled cardigan with pockets so searched the pattern library on loveknitting and came up with this pattern. Lovely easy to follow cable pattern and I used a soft grey Aran wool which I bought in Aldi an 80 / 20 acrylic wool mix soft and knitted up well.

Hi your cardigan looks amazing. I know it’s a while since you made this but was wondering if you could give me some advice on the sleeves. I am making the 5th size and it tells me to increase on row 3 and following 6th But the block and cable pattern says to increase on other rows in the patt. Do you do both lots of increasing Thanking you in advance

Hi Sally, On the first set of the pattern that’s row 1 to 28 you do the increases on the rows that they tell you for the size you’re knitting so for size 5 that would be rows 5, 9, 13 , 19 and 25 from what I can see and then after this first set you then increase 1 st at the beginning and end of every 3rd and following 6th row until you get to 76 stitches hope this helps 😁 At least that was how I read it when I did it, however my mum has short arms so I didn’t do the full length I started the decreases for the raglan after about 15 inches and I did a longer and tighter cuff as she doesn’t like baggy sleeves, I must have cast on less for the cuff then increased to the required stitch count for the last row of rib. I can’t quite remember and am terrible for writing notes . I love to knit then move on to the next project 😂

@Penny G: thank you so much. I understand this now , just needed a bit of explanation ... it’s been a while since I picked up the knitting needles and it’s the pattern reading that has suffered 😂. Getting back into it now though. And with your help can now knit the sleeves lol Thank you again

Oh Penny, this is gorgeous. My mum used to sit knitting these intricate Aran patterns from memory, no print outs, whilst watching TV. I have always loved the Aran and Guernsey sweaters too. Sadly, I'm not able to knit large projects due to severe rheumatoid arthritis in my hands.
I'm sure your mum must have loved her cardigan!

Love this! Nice and long and loose enough to wear over other things. Excellent work. It’s years since I knitted an Aran design, but you have inspired me.

Thank you Pauline you’re very kind, it felt a bit daunting to start with when I read the pattern but was actually very intuitive once you got into it, I would recommend it if you don’t mind written patterns if you prefer charts then maybe not for you, I’m not that keen on charts as I keep forgetting what the symbols mean , but I don’t mind them for colourwork. My gauge is slightly loose to be honest should have gone down a needle size but mum seems happy with it.
