I wanted to make a cosy blanket for my lovely new grand niece. I learned so much during this project; I probably made twice this amount of squares trying to get tensions and number of loops right. I must have tried every method of joining the squares known to man, but eventually, what worked best for me was picking up loops on every edge, knitting 1 row, where I adjusted by inc or dec to match number of loops of the square I was joining it to. I then transferred both sets of loops alternatively to 1 needle, then knit a cast off row.
