I suffer from a chronic pain disorder as a result of multiple level spine injuries (and now arthritis) from having been hit by a drunk driver 20 years ago. Several years ago, I had to have a total hip replacement (in my early 40s) as a result of that accident and subsequent arthritis. When my pain is bad, painkillers help, but what really takes the pain away is to get into the zen space of knitting; I put a hot compress on my back and knit and forget for a time that I hurt. After surgery, I was cold in the hospital blankets, so my mother picked up my Bolting for me and I spent the next four days swaddled in it, toasty warm and with my eyes shielded from the lights so that I could sleep and sleep. Life would be tremendously worse - and my blood pressure would probably be really high (pain increases blood pressure) without knitting; as it is, knitting makes life easier (and helps keep my blood pressure low and healthy). Thank goodness for knitting.
