Teaching myself to knit 3 years ago kept me from unraveling when my Father was diagnosed with cancer and then broke his hip. I think it also had a positive affect on him, because when I sat with him in the hospital or doctors offices I was knitting so he didn’t feel like he was keeping me from something. He would smile and say that his Mother used to knit too. After my Father, I had two other friends diagnosed with cancer, I used what worked so well with my Dad and said “I can be there, no problem, I’ll bring my knitting”. For them, I would sometimes knit hats while they received their treatments. Many times I would have to rip out rows but non-knitters didn’t know the difference, they just knew I was there and probably doing something I would be doing at home anyway. When at home and it all got too much for me I would work on the Hayfield Bonus Aran with all the cables to take my mind off things. For me knitting is the best therapy there is.
