Actually made this a couple of years ago. Wanted a fashionable warm winter hat. The pattern is fun to do, quick and easy, if familiar with cables. On completion i lined my hat, for extra warmth. Found the cut off top of a pair of winter tights, ideal for this purpose. Gathered together at the top and sewn around the the brim. Love this patten I have also made hats from it for my daughter and my friend and they have had plenty of wear from them. For the pompom used a pompom maker, they are very cheap to buy and make perfect pompoms quickly and easily.
I think an advanced beginner would be fine with this pattern, just need to really concentrate with the set up rounds of the pattern, the cables are then very easy and quick to do.
