    About

Perhaps it’s just me but, whenever I make a Heidi pattern, I spend AGES agonising over which colours to use. In this case, the problem was that every chicken-y combination I thought of seemed to involve a nice warm brown colour and, although I have some double knit in that exact shade, its 4-ply equivalent just doesn’t seem to exist.

Then, one afternoon after a long day at work, I was sitting crossed-legged in front of my 4-ply cupboard (PHWOAR!) when I noticed that yellow, pink and orange go well together really, really well. There’s just something pleasingly Barry Manilow-ish about them, isn’t there?! After that, it was just a case of adding a contrasting colour (“geranium” according to the ball band; pinky-red to you and me) to make the motifs pop.

These colours make you smile in a fruit salady sort of way. There are some amazing crochet patterns I just cant get to love it like knitting and only do it when necessary, but it does grow a lot quicker though.

It's nice being able to knit AND crochet, isn't it? A lot of people seem to be one or the other but not often both but I think it gives you the best of both worlds! On the whole though, I prefer the texture of knitting - if I make a crocheted toy, I quite often find myself being distracted by how the fabric looks!

@Trish Roberts: I'm knitting a Peter Rabbit at the moment complete with carrots of course, I tried a few different ways of making the carrot tops but crochet was most like the real thing, so It is useful to have both. I'm hoping Peter is happy with them too!

@Christine R: Ooh, I look forward to seeing that once it's done! I've got some orange and green sock wool somewhere and I keep thinking about crocheting a giant carrot. If I do, I'll have to let Peter know - it would probably keep him going for a good couple of winters!

I know the pain! I am in a process of deciding on colours for a koala by JO’s Crocheteria (one of the Heidi-esque designers) and I really don't know what I want to do!
At the moment I'm making a turtle using 3 different shades of green, but I think the koala should be more crazy :-)

Eee, I don't envy you - I went through a chronic African flower toy addiction and choosing colour combinations used to drive me mad! Even trying to create a 'random' patchwork of colours needs a bit of planning - how does that work?! I'm looking forward to seeing your koala... once you settle on a colour scheme! :-D

Thanks, Alison! I think I spent more time agonising over the colour than I did making it! The joys of DIY!
