Like many of us, I learned to knit as a child. My first project was when I was in the Brownies, and we all had to knit a blanket square. I don't remember if I ever saw the finished blanket! I then had quite a knitting spell in my early 20s, as it seemed cheaper to knit jumpers than to buy them, and it's what everybody did in those days (along with making clothes). A long spell of not picking up the needles followed, until I had more time as work tailed off, and more incentive as babies started appearing. I now have two grandchildren, and plenty of other babies/toddlers in my life to keep my fingers active.
I'm a fairly fast knitter, and I really don't like projects hanging around for too long - baby clothes and toys are ideal from that point of view.
As hobbies go, knitting isn't expensive - although it does depends on the size of your stash, and how much of a sucker you are, like me, for tempting offers!
